Abstract: Chemical information which is useful for chemistry teachers when compiled into data bases can be classified into three categories. (1) Chemical information: results of chemical and educational research work, which consist of compound data, new techniques, etc. These are occasionally necessary for teachers, and are mainly covered by existing data bases, such as Chemical Abstracts, and so on. (2) Educational information: development of new teaching materials or experiments, reports of research classes, and know-how on classroom teaching. These are very useful for teachers and some are issued in annual reports or journals, but the circulation of these is by no means wide. (3) Teaching materials: aimed at pupils' use, for self-learning, research activities, or project study. These are introduced in the senior high school chemistry course, together with the use of computers in class. Pupils are encouraged to use computers to obtain information for their study, but the necessary information is far from well-prepared. In this paper, we report on the recent activities of some groups of Japanese high school teachers and co-workers, by and for themselves, to create computer data bases, which mainly belong to categories (2) and (3). A critical lack of a full data base of experiments on the basis of a systematic curriculum is mentioned.
